Description of this 1990 Herreshoff Marco Polo 55 Three Masted Schooner For Sale

Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner, Johanna Summary,

BUY A PEIECE OF HISTORY,
That is basically NEW!

Johanna, a Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner is just that. Built by Bob Gordon a Sydney shipwright who built 3 Marco Polos, two from traditional wood and Johanna in 6mm steel was launched in 1990. Johanna has all the appeal of boats built in a bygone era, with all the advantages of modern building techniques, sails, equipment and safety requirements.
After launching in Sydney Johanna, a Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner was sailed to Tasmania by the second owner. Being mechanically inclined he replaced the original Lister engine with the Gardner LW and twin disc gearbox driving a 32? three blade fixed propeller, all this gear came off a Tasmanian fishing boat. It was overhauled and rebuilt before being installed and is really heavy duty.
The current owner sailed Johanna, a Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner from Tasmania to her current location at the Fremantle Sailing Club where all the sailing systems were upgraded on the boat.
All the original mast fittings have been replaced with new stainless fittings made by Keith Scott a local stainless fabricator and new standing and running rigging with blocks and winches added to improve both sailing safety and ease.
The mast was epoxy painted and new bow and stern rails installed.
Full batten, large roach sails similar to those used by designer Steve Dashew and his ?Sundeer? range of cruising boats were purchased and these add extra sail area without increasing the height of the mast. The sails are aerodynamically much more efficient than normal triangular sails and run on Windslyce tracks and sliders and with the sail being kept under control with lazy jacks and stored in zipper boom bags which are permanently attached to the booms. The system is easy and quick and makes light work of storing the three boomed sails.
Johanna, a Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner has been sailed single handed to Quindalup, Albany, Abrolhos Islands and Carnarvon as well as many shorter trips to Rottnest, Mandurah etc. The key to sailing the boat shorthanded is the use of the autopilot. It has 2 separate commercial grade autopilots complete with compass, rudder sensor and electric drive for total redundancy installed.
A full suite of electronic navigation gear was installed and the galley, bathroom and forward and aft quarters renewed to make the living arrangements more comfortable.
Johanna, a Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner is a safe, extremely strong vessel perfect for the sailing enthusiast that wants ease of sailing, cruising over long distances or a quick get away. Johanna is a magnificent traditional looking vessel with a striking appearance either under sail or at anchor.
Johanna, is a rare find as I know of no other vessel that is similar to her, she is virtually a little ship capable of travelling hundreds of thousands of cruising miles in an economical, safe and comfortable manner.

Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner, Johanna.
Accommodation Summary,

The engine is situated amidships and is housed in a full size engine room. This engine room is the nerve centre of the vessel and the wheelhouse and accommodations are built around it. It contains the fuel tanks which are built into the hull as a structural bulkhead. The engine room is also a workshop with a workbench and vice, shelving and the electrical and mechanical installations of the vessel. There is another watertight bulkhead between the wheelhouse and aft accommodation which effectively divides the vessel into three watertight compartments. This feature makes the boat virtually unsinkable and I have found it to be a plus, as the forward accommodation which is only usable at anchor or on a mooring is well separated from the aft accommodation. If there are children or young adults on board, they can occupy this area without any noise effecting the wheelhouse or aft accommodation.
There are 3 bunks and heads with a hot shower in the forward or guest accommodation. The wheelhouse contains two settees which convert to bunks which I use as sea berths when underway. The aft accommodation has a double bed, large table or chart table and ample storage for clothes etc.
The galley contains new cupboards, gas upright cooker and oven with lots of storage area for food and utensils.
The wheelhouse which is finished in Huon pine has a traditional look and feel about it also has a heater, a fold out table, shelving and lots of storage for lifejackets, harnesses, extra food and anything that is required for a long stay away from port.

Sailing

Herreshoff Marco Polo 55, Three Masted Schooner, Johanna.
Sail Summary,

When motor sailing 600 revs will drive the boat at 7knts with the wind at around 10 knots. At this sort of running the engine consumes approx 3.5 liters per hour. The vessel has a conservative range under power of 5,000 miles and when this is combined with the synergistic effect of the sails ( ie: both the engine and sails are more effective working together than the sum of the two working alone. ) the range is virtually unlimited. This is why Herreshoff regarded the design as so revolutionary as a long distance cruising boat.

A Word from the Master:
Excerpt taken from Sensible Cruising Designs, by L.F. Herreshoff. 1973.

55 FT HERRESHOFF THREE MASTED SCHOONER MARCO POLO - JOHANNA.

The Marco Polo is designed for mostly sailing under power and the fact is that the 55 FT HERRESHOFF THREE MASTED SCHOONER MARCO POLO is a long lean boat, it was easier to build than a shorter boat of the same weight and full lines. It also makes the Johanna easier to sail.

The principal objects that I tried for in the design are:

1. A very long cruising radius under power.
2. A sail plan that can be handled by one man on watch.
3. Extreme seaworthiness.
4. Shallow draft which will not only allow her to visit unique places but often will avert serious disasters.
5. She is cut away aft so she will lay to a sea anchor with her head well into the wind and a balanced rudder designed to swing all the way around.
6. Her wind resistance is cut to a minimum for laying at anchor in strong winds and for driving economically under power.
7. Her construction is simplified for economy in building as much as is compatible with strength.
8. She is arranged to sleep either four or five people and planned to be run with one man on watch so that the watches can be four hours on and eight off. This allows a cruise to be a pleasure but when one is not sure of eight hours unbroken sleep, the cruise is only hard work and drudgery. Few yachts have large enough hulls and small enough sails to allow this combination.

Sail Plan
Three masts have been adopted so great shifts in the centre of the sail plan can be made. In running in heavy weather, the sail can be way forward and prevent broaching to; in laying to the storm mizzen can be well aft. The foremast and mizzen are very strong for heavy weather.

On this long narrow hull, three masts are almost necessary if each sail is to be a high narrow airfoil. Three masts also almost do away with the necessity of reefing for one or more of her several sails can be taken in to accomplish the desired reduction of area, so that, although reefs are shown on the sail plan, they would seldom be used.

The deck at both ends has a high crown like a lifeboat and this is done to make the forward and after peaks useful for storage. The after deck too, will protect the man at the wheel from a pooping sea which is a matter of great importance, for it is believed this model of vessel can be driven very hard in a following sea as she has a small mid ship section, an easy run and a cut away forefoot, all of great importance in running.

No doubt as you know there has never been a small auxiliary designed before that was really efficient to drive under power or really had a long steaming radius. This in itself has a great effect on the rig and rigging. The Marco Polo will use her power when going dead to windward or dead before it in calm and light weather. With the wind abeam her sail plan should be as efficient as any other of its size, but that is the point, previous long distance cruisers have nearly all had to have large sail plans for light weather or they never would have gotten anywhere, so generally they have topmasts, topsails and all kinds of light weather gear which had to be taken in with a change of weather. With all there complicated gear there was much chafe and wear aloft and they required a large crew.

Here to fore, a small cruiser could not maintain a speed of say, five miles per hour for a thousand miles at a time, but the Marco Polo can generally maintain a speed of 240 miles in 24 hours. So the sailor can use the whole world as his cruising ground instead of some quite restricted zones.
